Hello, I’m Sarah…

A few years ago now, my mum and dad moved out of their house - mine and my sister’s childhood home. As the day of their move grew increasingly nearer I felt an odd sense of grief, and I wanted to say one last goodbye to the house. To the home, to my home.

So I took my camera and photographed the rooms, my family, and myself within the walls one last time. As I stood in the rooms I could see echoes of Sunday roasts, hear faint whispers of the Top 40 playing as we washed up afterwards, and feel the presence of my Grandma, sitting on the sofa with her oversized handbag, magically retrieving pieces of Fruit n’ Nut from its depths.

It was this project (which you can see in full in my End of an Era blog post) which made me realise just how important the feeling of home is to me, and to my filmmaking and photography. That sense of familiarity, of comfort, and of honesty is something I am continuously drawn to.

Hi, I’m Suzi…

I’ve had many homes over the years, but for me, home will always be in the water.

I was never scared of the water growing up, perhaps because I was around it so much. My dad has cine footage of me playing in the sea, and through the graininess, you can see how happy and delighted I am to be there.

Lying in the sea, looking up at the sky, the sun dancing on the waves around me - there’s nowhere I’d rather be. I always feel relaxed, at ease, myself. It’s my happy place, and my home.

A couple of years ago Sarah made a film using a Super 8 camera about this very feeling, you can watch it here.
