Hello, I’m Sarah…
A few years ago now, my mum and dad moved out of their house - mine and my sister’s childhood home. As the day of their move grew increasingly nearer I felt an odd sense of grief, and I wanted to say one last goodbye to the house. To the house, to my home.
So I took my camera and photographed the rooms, my family, and myself within the walls one last time. As I stood in the rooms I could see echoes of Sunday roasts, hear faint whispers of the Top 40 playing as we washed up afterwards, and feel the presence of my Grandma, sitting on the sofa with her oversized handbag, magically retrieving pieces of Fruit n’ Nut from its depths.
It was this project (which you can see in full in my End of an Era blog post) which made me realise just how important the feeling of home is to me, and to my filmmaking and photography. That sense of familiarity, of comfort, and of honesty is something I am continuously drawn to.
I live with my wife Suzi and our six year old daughter O, in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire.
Thanks to Matt Radcliffe, Anna Hornby & Eva Nemeth for the images.
